Painkillers (Drug Watch)
The most widely used class of drugs are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), a family that includes aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen, among others.
Most have been used for decades, provide significant pain relief, but they have capacity to induce serious bleeding problems in the stomach & intestines.
2nd Group includes Vioxx, Celebrex & Bextra --> known as Cox-2 inhibitors. They were 1st introduced in late 1990s to provide pain-relieving effects of NSAIDS without producing bleeding problems. (Some studies showed they did not always prevent stomach / intestine bleeding).
